Tutorial 2 of 7
Compare two offers and two versions of a policy
Intermediate 8 min
Put two gym contracts side by side clause by clause, then see what changed between the old and new privacy policy of an app.
The Compare view (key 3) answers two questions that single tools cannot: which of two offers is milder? and what changed between two versions? It works on documents that are already in the dossier and on the results of the readers.
1. Two offers, clause by clause
Open File → Templates and recent dossiers… and choose Two gym memberships compared. The library holds Offer A — FitFabrik Flex.txt and Offer B — IronPeak Premium 24.txt, and the Compare view already has the comparison Offer A vs offer B · Offers side by side.
Press Read both contracts. Paperwell runs the contract reading on each offer (two tool runs in the queue), then fills the table Clause categories of both offers:
| Clause category | Offer A | Offer B | Milder |
|---|---|---|---|
| Automatic renewal | not found | High attention | A |
| Minimum term / lock-in | Medium attention | High attention | A |
| Notice period | Medium attention | High attention | A |
and so on for early termination fees, price changes and liability. The headline says Offer A has fewer or milder attention points than offer B.
The score counts 9 points for a high, 4 for a medium and 1 for a low attention category; lower is better. In the example the line Points: offer A 8, offer B 62. sums it up. It is a reading aid, not a verdict: a long lock-in can still be fine if the price is right. Open Read on each offer to see the quoted wording.
Swap A and B exchanges the sides; Delete comparison removes only the comparison, not the documents.
2. Make your own comparison
Open New comparison, choose the kind — Offers side by side, Versions over time or Privacy policies —, pick A — old version / first offer and B — new version / second offer, give it an optional title and press Create comparison. You need two different documents with text: paste them with Paste text or extract the text of a PDF in Read.
3. What changed in a privacy policy
Open the template Privacy policy update (old vs new). It contains the 2025 and 2026 policy of a note-taking app and two comparisons:
- Wording: 2025 → 2026 (Versions over time). Press Compare the versions: the site’s what-changed-in-this-law tool lists changed, new and removed sections, with the numbers, deadlines and duties that moved.
- Data practices: 2025 → 2026 (Privacy policies). Press Decode both policies: each policy goes through the privacy-policy-decoder, and the table Data practices of both policies shows each practice as mentioned, not mentioned, new in B or dropped in B. New flags in B and Flags no longer in B list the warning signs that appeared or disappeared — for example new sharing with advertisers. Switch on Show unchanged practices too for the complete table.
4. Use the results
Every comparison appears in the Report (key 0) under Comparisons, and the findings of both readers are collected on the Overview. The same works for laws and regulations — the template Tenancy act amendment compares two versions of a (fictional) act and adds the day the change takes effect as a deadline.
